Hot off the press - New summiteer lessons for year 6!

Hot off the press are a new set of year 6 PSHE lessons, focussing on the important stuff in life, such as positive mindset, perseverance, the importance of kindness, honesty and being organised.  There are eight lessons which can be taught in any order and each one focuses on a different ‘summiteer skill.’

All the lessons still have Mount Everest at the heart of them and use stories and people from the mountain to inspire activities;

  • Arunima Sinha, who despite having her leg amputated, found within her the strength to summit Everest.
  • Ryan Sean Davey, who sneaked up Everest without a permit (why would you!)
  • The story of mountaineers who may have walked past a dying man on Everest without stopping to help.

These lessons are very varied in the activities that they use.

  • The persevering pioneer lesson is fitness based and encourages children to find out what motivates them to keep going in a very practical way.
  • The proud pathfinder lesson aims to feed a whole class project, working out how we can take pride in the achievements of other class members.
  • The meticulous mountaineer lesson gives children the experience of being Sherpas for a younger year group, working on skills such as organisation and planning.

These ‘Summiteer Skills’ lessons are deliberately flexible in how they can be used.

  • They can be taught in any order.
  • You can pick and choose which of them you want to do, or you may choose to do all of them.
  • Some lessons give you a choice of activities – depending on the time, resources and children that you are working with.

As always, every lesson plan fits on a single sheet of A4 paper and comes with all the printable resources that you need and a PowerPoint that helps to run the lesson. They also have a quick summary which shows you what resources you will need and how much preparation it will take.

So, even if you are just wanting some light relief after SATs or a break from your writing moderation, why not pick a couple to try?
